MichaungCyclone | IMD issues an ‘Orange’ alert for the residents of North Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal with a warning of extremely heavy rainfall (above 204.4 mm) on December 3 and heavy to very heavy rainfall on December 4

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical alert as Cyclonic Storm “MICHAUNG” intensifies over the Southwest Bay of Bengal. The storm is forecasted to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast, targeting the region between Nellore and Machilipatnam during the forenoon of December 5. With a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph, the cyclone poses a severe threat to the affected areas.

Originally identified as a Deep Depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal, MICHAUNG rapidly strengthened into a Cyclonic Storm at 0530 hours IST on December 3. In the past six hours, it has moved northwestwards at a speed of 5 kmph and is currently centered near Latitude 11.5°N and Longitude 82.4°E. As of 0830 hours IST on December 3, the storm is positioned about 290 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 290 km southeast of Chennai, 420 km southeast of Nellore, 530 km south-southeast of Bapatla, and 530 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam.

As for wind warnings, the Southwest Bay of Bengal along & off north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry Coasts is currently experiencing gale wind speeds of 60-70 kmph, expected to increase to 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from 3rd December evening. Westcentral Bay of Bengal and along & off south Andhra Pradesh Coast anticipate squally wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, likely to escalate to Gale Wind speed reaching 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph from 3rd evening, 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph from 4th morning, and 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph from 4th evening to 5th December noon. Along & off north Andhra Pradesh Coast expects squally wind speeds reaching 45-55 kmph, likely to increase to 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph from 5th December morning for the subsequent 24 hours. Along & off Odisha Coast is likely to experience squally wind speeds reaching 35-45 kmph, gradually increasing to 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph from 5th December evening for subsequent 12 hours.

In the wake of the impending cyclone, it is crucial for residents to stay vigilant and informed. Authorities are urging the public to follow safety protocols with official announcements. Additionally, evacuation plans are in place to relocate residents from high-risk areas to safer zones.

It moved northwestwards with a speed of 5 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0830 hours IST of today, the 03rd December, 2023 over the same region near Latitude 11.5°N and Longitude 82.4°E, about 290 km east-southeast of Puducherry, 290 km southeast of Chennai, 420 km southeast of Nellore, 530 km southsoutheast of Bapatla and 530 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam”

Damage Expected over coastal districts of South Andhra Pradesh (Nellore, Tirupati Prakasam,
Bapatla, Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari) and adjoining coastal districts of North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry
